The 14th annual 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo mountain bike race drew a record 1,857 participants to the Tucson area over the weekend.
The race, presented by Tucson Medical Center, drew nearly 4,000 people who stayed in the "24 Hour Town" alongside the course.
The event remained the largest 24 hour relay mountain bike event in the USA.
Some of the highlights included 70-year-old participant Wendy Skean, who not only completed the 16-mile course but did it 11 times on a single speed bike. She received an extended standing ovation at the awards ceremony.
(Yes, she is tougher than you, as her website says.)
There were a few injuries, which was pretty much par for the course, organizer Todd Sadow said.
"Fortunately all are stable and continuing forward with their lives, just with the occasional broken bone, bump or bruise to overcome during the coming weeks," he wrote in an email.
Tucson-based El Grupo Youth Cycling landed on three of the five podium spots in the 150 and below 5 person co-ed category. Ten of the youths had only picked up the sport of mountain biking two months ago, Sadow said.
Most experienced their first night ride ever on Saturday evening, during the race itself. El Grupo youth cycling is a Tucson based non-profit appealing to all youths with an emphasis on disadvantaged kids.
