Pima County properties are going tobacco-free on Jan. 1.

County officials say they are posting signs to announce the change. Open area parks are not currently included in the ban, but the ban does include community centers and the breezeways between the downtown county buildings. For downtown workers who smoke, the city-owned Presidio Park will remain available.

County Human Resources director Allyn Bulzomi  said the policy is designed to urge county employees to become healthier and consider quitting smoking.

The changes are occurring in accordance with a policy passed by the Pima County Board of Supervisors in November.
