As of July 8, childless adults were cut off from enrolling in the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), which is Arizona’s form of Medicaid.
The state-run health insurance program is for the state's most indigent residents. For individuals, that means an income of less than $11,000 per year.
The freeze will be in place until January 2014, or until additional funding becomes available.
Childless adults already enrolled in AHCCCS are grandfathered into the program for as long as they remain eligible, and as long as they comply with the yearly renewal process. State officials estimate about 100,000 Arizonans will go without coverage because of the freeze.
