Sunnyside school board member Daniel Hernandez Jr. is looking to use some recent attacks against him for political gain.

Hernandez has launched a fundraising campaign to fight a recall drive targeting him, as well as fellow board member Buck Crouch.

A citizens group wants to recall the two board members, citing their disunity with fellow board members Louie Gonzales, Bobby Garcia and Eva Carrillo Dong.

Hernandez and Crouch have been among Superintendent Manuel Isquierdo's biggest critics, citing a culture of fear and intimidation created by his leadership.

Gonzales and Garcia are targets of another recall drive because they, along with Dong, approved a two-year contract extension for Isquierdo in June.

In a letter sent to supporters Monday afternoon, Hernandez referred to fliers that were circulated throughout the district neighborhoods last month attacking his sexual orientation and stance on gun control.

In the letter, Hernandez said the people calling for his removal have resorted to "scare tactics."

"I'm facing a potential recall not because I've been ineffective but because a small and vocal minority is unhappy that I've tackled the big issues of corruption in the district," he wrote in the letter.

Hernandez is asking supporters to donate $1.38, $13.80 or $138, in response to the 1,380 signatures that need to be collected in order to call a recall election.

So far, about 75 people have contributed to his campaign.
