D on Guerra remembers the aroma of bread wafting over his mother's kitchen when he was growing up. And ripping into a loaf while it was still warm, savoring the yeasty wonder. As a young man he began to bake it himself, and opened his own bakery. But managing people was what he ended up doing. So he turned to teaching. Ah, but that bread, the joy of kneading it, eating it, and sharing it, haunted him. Today, he is a one-man shop, baking artisan bread out of his Tucson kitchen. And his signature loaves are much in demand. See Page E5.
