Wendell Hoag

81, died June 25, 2013, at his home in Tucson. Born on December 3, 1931 to Vergil C. and Irene Kolp Hogg in Bonesteel, SD, Wendell grew up in Stanfield, OR, served in the Navy for two years, and graduated in 1958 from Eastern Oregon University with a B.S. in Secondary Education/Biology. He married Lucy Gitatha in 1995 in Denmark and, after a few years of travel, they settled in Tucson. He had previously married Mary Ann Nelson in 1953 in Hermiston, OR (divorced 1958) and Jane Coffman in 1959 in Athena, OR (divorced 1987). Wendell was an underwriter for Safeco Insurance Co., in Seattle for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Wendell enjoyed birding, identifying plants and butterflies, hiking, camping, bicycling, and trips to national parks and historic areas. He climbed Washington's major peaks and Mt. Kilimanjaro. He was active with the Audubon Society in Seattle (President in 1974-75), Tucson, and Denver, and served on the Mountaineers' board. He volunteered for the political campaigns of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D). He donated his family papers and photos to the Univ. of Washington. His enjoyed racquet sports and participated in the Senior Olympics. He had an inquiring mind and enjoyed teaching others about nature. Survived by his wife, Lucy; children, Earlene Mokler (Richland, WA), Aaron Finn (Salem, OR), Samara Hoag (Jeanne Dorn) of Seattle, Corolla Hoag (Kevin Horstman) of Tucson, Calyx Hoag (Barbara) of Bellingham, WA); siblings, Elaine Porter (Roseburg, OR), James V. Hogg (Tacoma, WA) and Glenn Hogg (Concord, CA) and grandchildren, Sol Mokler, Ann, April and Sage Hoag. Wendell's body was donated for Parkinson's research. A Memorial Celebration will be held at a later date; his ashes will be scattered at a favorite birding locale.
