Michael Robert Melkers
Michael Robert Melkers, our beloved son, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Michael was an amazing young man and the epitome of joy. His life gave daily testimony to the power of the human spirit, especially through constant evidence of contentment, courage, perseverance, happiness, and eternal hope. He spent countless hours creating, exploring, and studying the people, places and things in his world. There was never a need to remind Michael to "stop and smell the roses". He noticed and appreciated everyone and everything. Michael's gifts, talents and interests were shared not only with his family, but also with friends, classmates, congregation, teachers, support staff, medical staff, university staff, and many others whose lives intersected in some way with his. There never was a person whose own impression of the world stayed exactly the same after spending time with our son. Ironically, as the focus on education and therapy insisted on impressing their well-intentioned and helpful agendas on his life, Michael was head and shoulders above all, the real and consummate teacher. His victorious life caused us to dig deep, reflect on values, contemplate character, and re-evaluate priorities. He showed us what leadership is and the power of love in its truest sense. Michael will be missed enormously by his family including his mother, Kristie Johnson; father, Ed Melkers; stepfather, Bryan Johnson; brother, Matthew Watkins; sisters, Ashley Watkins, Abigail Melkers and Sarah Johnson and by his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Our family is so grateful to everyone who came into our son's life to share their own gifts with Michael over the years as he grew from a little boy into a young man. There have been many wonderful people who have given their time and talents toward facilitating Michael's own efforts to have a happy, fulfilling and enormously rich life. There are no words to adequately thank everyone for their contributions to what was to become the absolute achievement of this overarching goal. Our gratitude will dwell permanently in our hearts and minds. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 8650 N. Shannon Rd., Tucson, AZ. We welcome anyone who knew and cared for Michael to share this time with our family. Donations may be made to the Michael R. Melkers Memorial Fund, c/o Canyon Community Bank, 7981 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ 85704. This fund will provide scholarships towards education and support that help to strengthen and empower families who have children with special healthcare needs.
