Joan Schleimer Zink

Joan Zink was the daughter of Albert and Gertrude Schleimer. She was born on November 7, 1926 in San Diego, CA. She graduated from San Diego High School and in 1942, at age 16, went on to attend the University of Arizona, where she became a member of Alpha Phi. She graduated in 1946, summa cum laude, with a B.A. degree in languages. She later returned to obtain her teaching credentials and in 1952, began teaching first grade at Tully Elementary School, where she remained for 30 years. She rarely missed a day of school. At her well-attended retirement, her colleagues presented her with the door knob of her classroom as a reminder of her years of dedication. Her special gift was helping children adapt to an environment where they were required to learn a second language. Throughout the years, she received notes of gratitude from students who remembered the teacher who gave them the confidence to continue their education and pursue their dreams. Joan married her husband of 48 years in 1964. Although their travels took them from the Near East to the Far East, what they enjoyed the most, was sitting in their own backyard with family and friends. In addition to her husband, Albert Zink, former District Manager of Tanner Motor Tours and owner of a successful small business in Tucson, Joan is survived by her daughter, Gail Sheppard, a Senior Project Manager in healthcare and her granddaughter, Jessica Sheppard, a student at San Diego State University and legacy/member of Alpha Phi. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, "Ralphie", who enjoyed putting his little head on her feet when she slept. Joan's friends and loved ones will forever remember Joan's ability to break out in a Spanish song and her willingness to make her granddaughter, Jessica, happy, which included learning the Macarena and doing it with enthusiasm! After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Joan joined her grandson, Andrew "Chase" Sheppard, who departed this life in December 2011, on what would have been Chase's 30th birthday, February 18, 2013. She fought this particular battle, valiantly, remaining cheerful and positive to the very end. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the Alzheimer Association. Joan was a past member of St. Luke's Board of Visitors. A private family service will be held. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
