Historic photos: America's first chain store, F.W. Woolworth

On Feb. 22, 1879, F.W. Woolworth open the first chain store in American in Utica, NY. The chain closed the last Woolworth store in 1997. In Tucson, a fire in the Woolworth store in Congress made big news in 1941 and the store moved to Congress and Pennington to take up the entire block in 1958. The last Woolworth in Tucson — in El Con Mall — closed in January, 1994.
