Arizona has 29 high-level inpatient psychiatric beds per 100,000 people.
The nonprofit Virginia-based Treatment Advocacy Center says when it comes to beds for the public health system, Arizona's psychiatric bed-per-population rate is just 5.9 per 100,000 people - the second-worst rate in the country.
State officials say the bed numbers here are consistent with a philosophy of the least restrictive environment, which means keeping patients in an outpatient setting wherever possible.
