Tucson is loaded with artists and art lovers - and the annual Lumie Awards are designed to give some of them the credit and attention they deserve.

But they can't win if you don't nominate.

The deadline for Lumie nominations is March 22.

Administered by the Tucson Pima Arts Council, the awards come with a nifty Tom Philabaum glass sculpture, and recognition at the annual awards reception and celebration, this year slated for June 7 at El Casino Ballroom.

"The arts play a unique role here in shaping our identity," said Emily Düwel, TPAC's communication manager.

"The Lumies are a way to invite the public to celebrate the tremendous talent of individuals, groups, organizations and businesses that contribute to the creative vibrancy of our region."

The categories for the award are Artist Lifetime Achievement; Established Artist; Emerging Artist; Established Arts Organization; Emerging Arts Organization; Arts Educator; Arts Education Program; Arts Administrator; Arts Patron; Large Business Partner, and Small Business Partner.

Among the past Lumie winners are David Tineo (Lifetime Achievement, 2011); Ruth Baron (Arts Supporter, 2009); Art Almquist (Arts Educator, 2008); John Wesley Miller Companies (Small Business, 2007), and Ellie Patterson (Arts Volunteer, 2008).

This is the 13th year that TPAC has honored those who make the art and those who support it in Pima County.

The program began as the Mayor's Arts Awards & Costume Ball, when educator Carroll Rinehart and folklorist Jim Griffith were among the honorees.
