Italian goodies and fresh-baked bread? You bet your Sweet Tooshie.

You may not have realized it - the sign isn't up yet - but Sweet Tooshie's Bakery has been open since April at 8963 E. Tanque Verde Road, (777-8324). It's just north of the Kirk-Bear Canyon Branch Library.

Owner Pete Amplo, father of eight and a retired Department of Corrections employee, describes the spot as "an old-school Italian place." He uses family recipes along with some of his own, and the family all pitches in. That would be his youngest daughter gracing the bakery's logo.

The cases are loaded with everything from mini-eclairs to cupcakes and cinnamon rolls, bready with a thick, sweet, vanilla-kissed frosting and loaded with dark, almost spicy cinnamon. The bakery also does custom cakes.

Sweet Tooshie's Bakery hours are 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays.
