Ric's Cafe, the longtime modestly upscale eatery in River Center, is out of business after the landlord locked the doors and seized the property.

  Don Baker of Baker-Larsen, which owns the foothills shopping center, said Ric's owner Jack Ahern was in arrears on the rent.

In a recorded message on the business's phone, Ahern said he would continue catering but was closing Ric's "due to construction" at River Center. The plaza has been a buzz of construction for the past six months with a new Whole Foods market, a grocery store that replaces the long-gone markets that once anchored the plaza.

Ric's had been open at River Center since the late 1990s. Ahern had owned it the past 11 years.
