László Veres tried for years to convince Richard Faith to arrange his orchestra work "Festivals" for concert band.

He never did.

So Veres, with the Tucson composer's blessings, tackled the task himself.

"I pretty much kept the way he did it for orchestra, but I took out the string parts and rearranged it. Actually it came out pretty good," said Veres, whose volunteer Arizona Symphonic Winds will premiere the arrangement at its annual spring concert on Sunday. "It fits the band very well. Some orchestra pieces transcribe very well for bands. This is one of them."

Veres has long championed Faith, whose works he has performed since he led the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra in the 1980s. In addition to the 65-member volunteer Symphonic Winds, Veres has programmed Faith's music for his professional Tucson Pops Orchestra.

Faith, a classically trained pianist, also will make a rare appearance on stage, performing the slow movement of his Second Piano Concerto.

"At first I asked him to do the Beethoven First Piano Concerto, but he told me, 'László, I tried it but my arthritis won't let me'," Veres said of the 86-year-old Faith, who still actively composes.

"He's an amazing man. Sometimes as people get older, we neglect those people. I like Richard so much. He should be recognized by the public," Veres said.

Also on Sunday's program is another of Veres's favorite composers, Giuseppe Verdi.

"It's the 200th anniversary of his birth," Veres offered up as his reason for performing three Verdi works, including the "Anvil Chorus" from "Il Trovatore." Tucson heard the Arizona Opera perform "Il Trovatore" earlier this month at Tucson Music Hall.
