Society ends season with the "naughty" list
Matthew Locke was ill-tempered, vitriolic and spiteful. The Baroque composer was also a trailblazer in chamber and dramatic music, writing the music for a number of period theater pieces in his native England.
Other bad-boy composers: Tarquinio Merula, William Brade, Nicola Matteis and Dario Castello - all tabloid fodder if this crew were alive today.
Their music and personalities are the crux of early music ensemble Wayward Sisters' concert "The Naughty List," which closes Arizona Early Music Society's season on Sunday.
The group - baroque violinist Beth Wenstrom, Anne Timberlake on recorders, baroque cellist Anna Steinhoff and John Lenti on theorbo and guitar - aims to show that these bad boys redeemed themselves through their music.
Sunday's concert begins at 3 p.m. at St. Philip's In the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. Tickets are $25, $22 for seniors and $5 for students at the door. Call 690-1361.
St. Philip's friends hosting Bach Marathon
St. Philip's in the Hills Friends of Music will host its 22nd Annual Bach Marathon with perfomances Saturday at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church.
"Bach: The Sacred Dance" features St. Philip's choirs, with soloists and a chamber orchestra, conducted by the church's newly installed director of music, Woosug Kang. The marathon kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday with two of Bach's Cantata 140, "Wachet auf," known for its famous Advent chorale melody and inventive orchestration; and Cantata 12, "Weinen, Klagen," a somber work punctuated by lyrical writing for solo oboe.
The afternoon session Saturday begins at 1 p.m.and features Brazilian organist/harpsichordist Julia Brown.Performances are at St. Philip's, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. Admission is a suggested donation of $20 for both sessions, $10 for one at the door. Details: Call St. Philip's at 299-6421.
