Civic Orchestra seeks musicians for 2013-14
If you've ever dreamed of of playing in an orchestra, your dream could come true.
The volunteer Civic Orchestra of Tucson is auditioning for new players to fill out its 2013-14 roster. It is particularly in need of a viola, co-principal cellist, double bass, trumpet and tuba players.
The 65-member orchestra includes musicians of all ages. Its members include students, music teachers and professionals in various fields.
In the 2013-14 season, the orchestra will perform works inspired by Shakespeare, from French composers, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, and works by Bach, Wagner and Copland. A season highlight will be "The Nutcracker" ballet. The season ends with the popular pops concert at Reid Park. The group's concerts are free of charge.
To arrange an audition, contact Herschel Kreloff, the music director and conductor, at email@example.com or 730-3371. Auditions will be held this summer. Rehearsals begin in August and are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road. Details: cotmusic.org
Dove of Peace hosting Jazz Under the Stars
Tucson's "crooner in chief" Joe Bourne will headline the ninth annual Jazz Under the Stars concert at Dove of Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday.
"He's been here before and he's a big hit," said Eric Holtan, who coordinates the annual jazz event to raise money for community charities. "So we're thrilled to have him back. He's Tucson's crooner in chief."
The name fits. The mention of Bourne's name conjures the sounds of sultry contemporary jazz. But Bourne isn't simply a jazz man. Put him behind the mic and invite him to dip into the Great American Songbook or classic blues and R&B gems and you'll feel as if the clock has rewound to a simpler time when a singer's voice was the most important aspect of a concert.
The Massachusetts native has been performing since he joined his church choir as a youngster. He has performed around the world in countries such as Australia, Aruba and Indonesia, as well as throughout Europe. According to his bio, he also appeared in a Christmas TV special with Ray Charles that was filmed in Germany and broadcast internationally.
At Saturday's concert, Bourne is focusing on his favorite jazz standards. The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Dove of Peace, 665 W. Roller Coaster Road, west of Oracle Road. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be taken. Details: doveofpeacetucson.org or 887-5127.
