How would you use your position as an elected official to help businesses create jobs in Southern Arizona?

Over my last two years at the Legislature, I have established a consistent track record of creating an economic environment where businesses can flourish in Arizona. And we are beginning to see the results. New jobs are being created here every day. Arizona ranked 8th in the nation for new job creation earlier this year and CNN recently reported that Arizona is #1 state in the country in which to start a business. I pledge to continue to work hard to keep Arizona on its path to recovery and prosperity. I am hopeful that leadership in Pima County and the City of Tucson will join the Legislature in implementing business-friendly strategies. By doing so, I am confident we can build a vibrant economic environment and bright future for Tucson and Southern Arizona.

Should the qualifications for Medicaid or AHCCCS be broadened to make more people eligible?

At this time, the State of Arizona can ill-afford expanding its Medicaid program (AHCCCS) without seriously jeopardizing funding for other critical programs such as education and public safety. Therefore, at this time, AHCCCS should not be broadened. Any expansion must be based on a steady and consistent funding source.

If you were in a position to vote on SB1070, would you have voted for or against it?

I voted for SB1070.

In a world of finite resources, what if anything would you be willing to cut to better fund education?

Education spending—kindergarten through university—account for more than 50% of the spending contained in Arizona State Budget. There are precious few areas in the budget to cut without drastically affecting other critical programs. Therefore, the best and most responsible way ahead is to pursue economic policies that will lead to more and better paying jobs in Arizona. By growing the economy, we will increase the tax base from which we can increase the funding for education and other critical programs.

Should local government fight to keep the Rosemont Copper Mine out or encourage the company to stay?

There are county-wide elections this year and city elections in 2013. As a strong supporter of local control and a fundamental believer in the wisdom of the people, I am confident that the residents of Pima County and Tucson will let local government officials know what they should do with respect to the Rosemont Mine.

What is the most important issue in your race?

By far, the economy is the most important issue. Together, Arizonans have weathered the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. We have had to make some difficult choices at the Legislature, but we have erased a $3 billion deficit and today Arizona enjoys a $650 million surplus. At the same time I’ve worked hard at the Legislature to help create an environment where business can flourish in our state. Today, Arizona ranks 8th in the nation for new job creation, #1 for new business start-ups, and our unemployment rate continues to drop. I pledge to keep Arizona on the path of fiscal responsibility and positive job creation. By doing so, we can get Arizonans back to work, grow our economy, and fully fund our critical programs such as education, public safety, and transportation.
