About 70 species of bats live in the Sonoran Desert region. Bats are an important part of the ecosystem, helping to keep populations of night-flying insects like mosquitoes in check. They also help disperse seeds and pollinate many plants.

There are almost 1,000 bat species in the world, accounting for nearly a quarter of all mammal species. They are found on every continent except Antarctica.
