The Green Valley/Sahuarita area still doesn't have a hospital, but it is getting a new seven-day-per-week urgent- care center.

Tucson-based Northwest Medical Center announced Tuesday that it is opening an urgent-care center, plus an adjoining primary-care physician office in Sahuarita later this year.

Hospital officials said they are responding to residents' need for a place with extended hours where they can go for minor emergencies.

Northwest Medical Center Urgent Care, which will employ between 10 and 12 people, will be located in the Sahuarita Palms Plaza, 1295 W. Duval Mine Road in Sahuarita.

Hours for the new urgent care have not yet been set, but it's expected to be open seven days per week with hours into the early evening, Northwest Medical Center spokeswoman Kimberly Chimene said. She said officials are considering being open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, but that hasn't yet been determined.

The urgent care, which will have a lab and X-ray services, will accept walk-ins. Adjacent to the urgent care will be a separate Northwest Allied Physicians office with an internal-medicine physician.

Northwest officials say they will continue to add physicians and specialists as the community needs.

"We have spent a lot of time recently in the Green Valley/ Sahuarita area asking residents what they need in terms of medical-care options," Northwest Medical Center's Chief Executive Officer Paul Kappelman said in a prepared statement.

"We heard them loud and clear when they asked for a place to go for minor emergencies that is open extended hours with physicians who specialize in that type of care."

The for-profit Northwest Medical Center already operates three existing urgent-care facilities in the Tucson area in addition to a 300-bed hospital.

Northwest Medical Center isn't the only Tucson medical entity to add new services for Sahuarita/Green Valley residents.

Earlier this year, the Carondelet Medical Group opened an outpatient walk-in clinic with extended hours in Sahuarita. The clinic is at the Rancho Sahuarita Marketplace and Village in the Fry's Shopping Center on the northeast corner of Interstate 19 and Sahuarita Road.

Carondelet had previously talked about opening a hospital in Sahuarita, but those plans were shelved amid the recession.
