Pima County wants to place youths into subsidized jobs in private workplaces this summer.

The county puts hundreds of young people ages 14 to 21 to work each summer with private employers and government agencies.

County officials are looking for local private sector professionals - particularly architectural, legal, medical and veterinary firms - to host these temporary employees, especially in June and July.

The Pima County One-Stop Career Center and/or its contractors have limited funds to pay or help pay these workers minimum wage. Employers who can pay or contribute to their young employees' wages make it possible for more youths to participate in the program.

The youths apply to take part in the Summer Youth Employment Program. They are assessed and attend an employability skills workshop, where they learn about good work habits and employer expectations before they go to work.

Last year, more than 4,000 young people applied. More than 1,500 were placed.

A written agreement is required to host a summer youth employee.
