Golden Eagle Distributors has opened a new compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel station at its south-side property to fuel its CNG fleet - as well as to serve the general public.
The station at the beer distributorship, 705 E. Ajo Way, was installed in partnership with Chicago-based gas supplier Trillium CNG and is only the third public CNG station in the area, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
The CNG station is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and takes all major credit cards. The current price is $2.299 per "gasoline gallon equivalent," or GGE, a measure that approximates comparable mileage using regular gas.
Golden Eagle CEO Christopher Clements said the station will help serve the needs of the company's local fleet of 23 CNG trucks, as well as "provide much needed CNG infrastructure for our community."
Besides being cheaper than gasoline right now, CNG is one of the cleanest fuels available for use in heavy-duty trucks, producing 95 percent less particulate matter, 80 percent less nitrogen oxide and 23 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than diesel, the DOE says.
Golden Eagle plans to open a similar CNG station at its Casa Grande distributorship by year's end.
