The Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against a Kentucky-based company that advertised postal jobs locally.

Career Exams (also known as Career Advancement Group) placed classified newspaper ads across the country, including in the Arizona Daily Star, advertising employment with the U.S. Postal Service.

Last week, the FTC sued Career Exams and another Kentucky company, O'Brien Marketing, in federal court, accusing the two companies of deceptive advertising.

The FTC has won a temporary court order barring the companies from selling what they say are postal job guides. Settlement talks are under way, according to court documents.

According to the FTC, job seekers who answered the ads were talked into buying study materials for up to $127. After that, they received a book titled "Federal Employment Guide," which included information about the Postal Service hiring process.

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona said it received nearly 400 inquiries about the companies' ads, but no complaints. The companies have settled 33 complaints nationwide, including one in Phoenix.

The BBB notes that study materials for any written exam are free to applicants through the Postal Service or a local library, and all applicants must apply through the agency's website.
