Cox Communications says it has boosted the speed of its top-level Internet service by up to three times and significantly increased the speeds of its other service tiers.

Cox says its top-tier Ultimate broadband service now offers download speeds as fast as 150 megabits per second, up from 50 Mbps.

The top download speed of company’s next-highest service tier, Premier, went to 50 Mbps from 25 Mbps; Preferred service increased to 25 Mbps from 15 Mbps and the lowest-tier Essential service now maxes out at 5 Mbps, up from 3 Mbps previously. Upload speeds also increased commensurately.

The new speeds have automatically gone into effect with no impact on pricing, so no action from Cox customers is needed, the company said.

Cox noted that to get the top speeds, it’s key that customers have the most advanced equipment (specifically, DOCSIS 3.0 modem technology may be required to get maximum speeds on the top two Internet service tiers).

Cox Southern Arizona vice president Lisa Lovallo said the company has boosted Internet speeds 14 times in the past five years.
