University of Arizona professor Hsinchun Chen has been awarded the University of Arizona's Thomas R. Brown Chair in Management and Technology.

Chen, a professor of management information systems at the Eller College of Management, was named chair-holder because of his accomplishments in data mining and informatics.

Sarah Smallhouse, president of the Brown Foundations, said the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Management and Technology is very well-regarded.

"It's the highest form of academic honor a professor can have," Smallhouse said.

Chen is one of two chair-holders for the Thomas R. Brown Foundation. The second, UA professor Gerald Swanson at the Eller College, was the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Economic Education. Smallhouse said Swanson is recently retired, and the Brown Foundation is looking to fill the second chair soon.

Smallhouse said the chair is reviewed every five years.

Chen said his new position comes with $60,000 per year for five years, extra money that will help him with research and development on projects.

Chen, who is director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Eller College, developed Dark Web, a scientific data-mining program designed to collect terrorist-generated content that can spread on the Internet. Dark Web can collect data in the form of images, video, text and other files, regardless of language.
