Border Patrol event seeks new officers
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is holding a hiring event next Saturday, July 12, for those interesting in becoming a CBP officer.
The event offers one-on-one meetings with current officers and human-resources employees to learn about the position, as well as its responsibilities, qualifications, training, pay and benefits.
The event is from noon to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road.
NW Medical Center to open cardiac unit
The Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new 48-bed cardiac center at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The cardiac center is on the fourth floor of the medical center at 1551 E. Tangerine Road, and it will start admitting patients on July 14, said hospital spokeswoman Kristina Gobel.
The 25,000-square-foot addition will serve a region with a high population of residents between 60 and 80 years of age, who are prime candidates for life-threatening heart conditions, according to a Northwest Medical Center news release.

Military health-care group seeks renewal
TriWest Healthcare Alliance, a Phoenix-based company that administers a major U.S. Defense Department health-care program in 21 Western states, has filed a bid to continue its management role for another five years, the East Valley Tribune reported.
The amount of the bid was not disclosed, but the current contract involves spending of about $2 billion annually to cover health-care requirements of 2.7 million active-duty military personnel, reserves, retirees and eligible family members in the Western region.
TriWest delivers the services through a network of more than 135,000 health-care providers under the military's Tricare program. The system provides care for military personnel who cannot obtain the services or treatments they need at on-base medical centers.
TriWest spokesman Richard Gray said the company does not know of any other bidders. The company employs about 1,000 people in Phoenix, he said.
